FORMER COUNTY CLERK BIRDSONG DEAD AT 61
Former Gregg County Clerk, B. M. "Buck" Birdsong of Longview died Wednesday afternoon in a local hospital following a brief illness.  He was 61.  Services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Rader Funeral Home in Longview with the Rev. Gus Browning officiating.  Burial will be in Danville Cemetery in Kilgore.  Birdsong was a native and lifetime resident of Longview. He served as Gregg County Clerk for 19 years.  Birdsong had worked as an employee in the clerk's office for 10 1/2 years, and moved up to head the office in 1963, succeeding Lewis Richardson.  Until his retirement in 1982, Birdsong had been only the third county clerk in this century for Gregg County.
Longtime County Clerk Dush Shaw was appointed to the office in November, 1898, and served until he was succeeded by Richardson in 1945.
Birdsong was 36 when he was first elected to office. He announced on November 26, 1981, that he would take early retirement at age 56 so he and his wife could take advantage of the time to "enjoy life and turn our pursuits toward our own private lives."  He said he planned to "raise a few cows, grow a few vegetables and catch a few fish."  He still had a year left on his term when he retired, and the commissioners court appointed Bob Rodgers to serve as interim clerk until the end of the term. Rodgers had said if appointed, he would not seek election to the job.
A crowded field of candidates then filed, and Janice Hancock was elected.  Mrs. Hancock said the county clerk's office would be closed at 3 p.m. Thursday so employees could attend the funeral.
Birdsong was a member of the Winterfield Methodist Church and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He
was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Forgein Wars.  He is survived by his wife, Bernice; a son, B. M. "Buck" Jr. of Kilgore; daughter, Bonnie Day of Houston; four grandchildren; and his mother-in-law, Susie Story of Longview.
