Selected Families and Individuals

James Robert "Jimmy" RILEY [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1, 2 on 29 Feb 1880 in Bearhouse TS, Ashley Co., Arkansas 3. He was baptized in Aug 1897 4 in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Ashley Co., Arkansas 4. He died 5, 6 on 21 Oct 1939 in Jefferson Co., Arkansas. He was buried 1 in Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas. Jimmy married 7, 8 Mary Sue RICHARDSON on 27 Dec 1901 in Ashley Co., Arkansas.

James joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church by "experience and baptism" August 1897 and left Mt. Olive by letter in June of 1899 [Mt. Olive Records, p. 72, 94].
The January 2, 1902 edition of the Ashley County Eagle announced James' marriage:
"On Friday evening last, Mr. James Riley and Miss Mary Sue Richardson followed in the wake of recent runaway couples and entered the army of Hymen’s happy recruits. They were married at the residence of W.A. Harbison, Hamburg, and left immediately for Berea to receive congratulations and take shelter under the roof of the groom’s parents until the bride’s family could become reconciled to their loss, which they should have no trouble in doing, as the happy young couple are well worthy of each other, and their future prospects are bright and full of promise. The groom is one of Hamburg’s most enterprising and successful young merchants, and the bride one of the prettiest and most amiable members of our social circle. Our hearty congratulations and best wishes are theirs."
From James' 1918 WW I Registration Card, he is described as "tall and slender" with "dark brown eyes and hair."  At this time he is residing in Little Rock, Arkansas at 1524 W. 24th Street, and is a Lumberman working for Nowlin Riley Lumber Co.  (See the "scrapbook" link with the multi-media edition of this report).  The Riley Lumber Co. was just west of Little Rock High (Central High).  In late 1929 an equipment salesman convinced them to buy all new equipment and so they became deeply in debt.  In 1930 the lumber company had to be folded up.
James took his family to Boydell where his wife's family had left her a farmhouse with some acreage to farm and also a grocery store and service station.  Then James moved to Pine Bluff and opened Riley Butane and prospered until his premature death.  James was big in the development of Baptist Hospital in Little Rock and the chapel in the hospital was named the James R. Riley Chapel in appreciation for his financial help in the early years of the hospital.  (this hospital has moved to the west end of town, and what is left of the building is Children's hospital as of 2006).  [Patrick Moffeit Riley, via Schatzi Riley; Reflections of Ashley County, p. 376].
James Robert Riley's obituary is published in the 23 Oct 1939 edition of the Pine Bluff Commercial, p. 5.

Hunter, along with brothers Joe Pat and John Rutledge joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in July 1899 by "experience and baptism." Hunter left Mt. Olive via letter on 21 October 1905 [Mt. Olive Records, p. 72], when it is thought he moved to Montrose, Arkansas.
In August 1906, Hunter married Rosa Dell Richardson.  The Ashley County Eagle newspaper reported "Mr. Hunter Pryor Riley and Miss Rosa Dell Richardson were married at 9:45 this morning in the Baptist Church, the pastor, Rev. V. L. Stonnell officiating.  The groom is a popular young businessman of Montrose and the bride the lovely young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Richardson... They left on the 10:15 train and carried with them the best wishes of our entire community for a bright and blissful future." [Ashley County Eagle, August 23, 1906].
On Hunter's 1918 WW I Registration Card, he is described as being of "medium height and build." He was living in Montrose, Arkansas at that time, and for occupation he lists, "Farmer, Timber Broker, and Postmaster". (See "scrapbook" link with the multi-media edition of this report).  Later in 1918, Hunter and Rosa Dell moved to Little Rock where Hunter joined brothers James Robert and Columbus Allen in running the Riley Brothers Lumber Company.  As home building slowed down in the 1920's, the lumber business declined and the brothers parted ways.  Hunter and Rosa Dell moved to Lake Providence, East Carroll Pa., Louisiana, where he operated his own mercantile business.  Hunter and Rosa Dell are noted as residing in Lake Providence for the 1930 census.
Hunter would later move to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he went into the propane gas business.  The business grew, with Hunter becoming the first president of what would later be known as the Arkansas LP Gas Association.  As of 1987, Riley Butane was operated by the third generation.
Hunter's obituary was published in the 21 Sep 1967 edition of the Ashley County Ledger and the 17 Sep 1967 edition of the Pine Bluff Commercial.
