He died 5 on 14 Jan 1964 in Booneville, Logan Co., Arkansas 6. He was buried 6 in Oak Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Booneville, Logan Co., Arkansas. Jesse married 7 Ella Louise STEVENSON "Tine" in 1934.

KUHLS, Francis

Jesse was disposed toward being a medical doctor at an early age.  Allegedly he could point out every bone in the human body at age four, which was taught to him by his oldest brother James Robert.  At age 13 Jesse dropped out of school to work full time on the family farm.  At age 18 he was able to go to Little Rock to live with his brother James Robert and attend Little Rock High School, where he graduated in 1912.  From there he went to Tulane Medical School and graduated with honors in 1916.
Jesse developed tuberculosis which became severe by the time of his graduation from Tulane.  Doctors thought he may be dead within a year of his graduation, and he returned home to Ashley County.  Jesse would later say it was during this time that God put upon him that he should apply himself toward treating tuberculosis victims.
From Jesse's WW I Registration Card (about 1917), he is described as "medium height and stout build with brown eyes and dark hair."  At that time he was a medical doctor working in Montrose, Arkansas. His tuberculosis is also listed on the card.  (See the "scrapbook" link with the multi-media edition).
In 1921, Jesse took a position at the Southern Baptist Sanatorium at El Paso, Texas.  He became medical director there about 1923 and stayed there until 1930.  In 1924 Claudia would pass away, and about this time his parents came to stay with him helping to raise his three daughters.  In 1930 Jesse moved back to Arkansas, becoming medical director of the Arkansas Sanatorium at Booneville.  In 1934 he married Miss Louise Stevenson, with whom he adopted his daughter.  His health forced him to retire from the Sanatorium in 1955, but he remained superintendent ermitus for the institution.
Jesse's obituary is published in the 13 January 1964 edition of the Pine Bluff Commercial, p. 10.
