   Colonel (Ret.) Willard Horton Augspurger, 83, of Orlando, FL, died Thursday, January 11, 2007, at the Orlando Regional Lucerne Hospital. A native of Saybrook, Illinois, who spent his childhood and early adult years as a resident of Montrose before moving to Monroe, Louisiana, he was inducted into the U.S. Army on his twentieth birthday and accumulated nearly forty years service including wartime duty in four primary campaigns. He served in World War II.
   He was a graduate of the Command and Staff College and retired as commander of the 4th Brigade, 95th Division. He taught advanced electronics for 20 years at Delta Ouachita Technical Institute in West Monroe, Louisiana. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Monroe for many years. After his retirement he moved to Shreveport, LA, where he was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Sep 1877: brought before the chruch as not "having fellowship" with fellow brother John Wheat (Mt. Olive records, p. 45).
May 1878: it appears the conflict between the Riley's and the Wheat's is resolved (Mt. Olive records, p. 47).
Aug 1882: chosen as a church delegate to the association (Mt. Olive records, p. 54).
Appears that Jim was a member of Mt. Olive through at least 1927.

According 1880 US Census, he was a widower (age 25 at the time). Occupation was farmer, resident location in 1880: Bearhouse, Ashley, Arkansas.

From the August 11, 1904, edition of the Ashley County Eagle:
"Frank Riley, 12, son of Mr. J. N. Riley, Berea, died last Thursday evening, Aug. 5th, 1904, and was buried at Mount Olive Cemetery the next day."  [Note that Aug 5 is likely in error--Thursday was August 4th, and his headstone has Aug 4th.  jrs]

James Samuel "Samuel" RILEY [scrapbook] was born 1, 2 on 30 Oct 1899 in Arkansas. He died 1 on 12 Jul 1905 in Arkansas. He was buried 1 in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas.

From the July 20, 1905, edition of the Ashley County Eagle:
"Mr. Jim Riley buried his youngest son one day last week, the second child to die in a year."

Ira Green RILEY Sr. [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1, 2, 3 on 25 Oct 1890 in Mist, Ashley Co., Arkansas. He was baptized in Aug 1905 4 in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Ashley Co., Arkansas 4. He died 2, 5 on 2 Jan 1979 in Ashley Co., Arkansas. He was buried 6 in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas. Ira married 6 Lula Belle STANLEY on 2 Jan 1916.

   From Ira's 1917 WW I Registration Card, he is described as "medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair."  At that time he was residing in Mist, Arkansas, with an occupation of "farming." (See "scrapbook" link with the multi-media edition of this report).
   Around 1943, Ira and Lula moved from Berea to the Promise Land community.  He farmed until he became unable to work due to his health.  

Lula Belle STANLEY [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2, 3 on 1 Jun 1890 in Arkansas 4. She was baptized 5 in 1910 in Central Baptist Church, Berea, Ashley Co., Arkansas. She died 2, 3, 6 on 31 Mar 1989 in Hamburg, Ashley Co., Arkansas. She was buried 2 in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas. Lula married 2 Ira Green RILEY Sr. on 2 Jan 1916.

   Lula Belle Stanley Riley joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church "by letter." [Mt. Olive Baptist Church Records, p. 117].  She was known to be very fond of gardening and beautiful flowers were always around her house.  She made some of the best tomato soup known.  Lula Belle never learned to drive, and only went to town when she needed new clothes, shoes, or for Christmas gifts.  Ira always bought groceries for her.
   Lula Belle was widowed on her 63rd wedding anniversary with the passing of Ira.  She would live to be two months shy of turning 99 when she passed away on 31 March 1989.  Her obituary is published in the 5 April 1989 edition of the Ashley County Ledger.  [Adapted in part from the article written around 1987 by Nancy Riley Collins for "Reflections of Ashley County", p. 374-375].

Harold Frederick "Fred" RILEY [scrapbook] 1 was born 2, 3 on 14 Jan 1924 in Arkansas. He died 3 on 4 Dec 1944 in Germany. He was buried 4 in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas.

Pvt Harold F. Riley, was born January 14, 1924, to Lula Belle Stanley and Ira Green Riley, Sr. A graduate of Hamburg High School, he entered the Army in March 8, 1944.  He trained in Camp Robinson, Arkansas, and served in England, Belgium and Germany with the 28th Infantry Division and won the Purple Heart. He was killed during the Battle of the Bulge on December 4, 1944, in Germany.  Memorial services were held on Sunday, January 21, 1945, at the Promise Land Baptist Church. His remains were initially buried in the Henri Chapelle Cemetery in Belgium. Then when his remains were returned to Ashley County, funeral services were held Tuesday, November 25, 1947, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church near Berea.  Rev. Stanley Jordan, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg, and the local American Legion officiated at the ceremony.

He died 2, 5 on 11 Apr 1944 in Ashley Co., Arkansas. He was buried 2 in Hamburg Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas. Robert married 6, 7 Eliza Virginia MCDOUGALD on 6 Jan 1891 in Ashley Co., Arkansas.

Mar 1883: excluded from fellowship of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church due to "dancing" (Mt. Olive Records, p. 56).
9 Sep 1884:  joined Central Baptist Church, left via "letter" in 1891.
23 Jul 1887:  considered in "disorder" according to Central Baptist Church records
27 Aug 1887:  made concessions to the church (Central Baptist Church) (Note that Eliza McDougald, Robert's future wife would join the church this same day by "experience and baptism").
In 1891 Robert rejoined Mt. Olive Baptist church "by letter" along with wife Eliza. They were members there until 3 April 1909 when they left by letter (Mt. Olive Records, pp. 72, 107).

Eliza Virginia MCDOUGALD [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1, 2, 3 on 2 Apr 1873 in Arkansas. She was baptized 4 on 27 Aug 1887 in Central Baptist Church, Berea, Ashley Co., Arkansas. She died 1 on 21 May 1949. She was buried 1 in Hamburg Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas. Eliza married 3, 5 Robert Randolph RILEY on 6 Jan 1891 in Ashley Co., Arkansas.

   George joined Central Baptist Church of Berea, Ashley Co., Arkansas in August 1889 and was a member through April 1899. In April 1899 he is noted as joining Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Berea (Mt. Olive Records, p. 72).
   Lived his entire life in the home in which he was born--that of his father James Cooper Riley (Reflections of Ashley County, p 371).
   From George's 1918 WW I Registration card, he is described as "tall and stout with blue eyes and brown hair."
Following are entries from the records of the Central Baptist Church:

   August 8th 1891:  "Charges were preferred against Bro. George Riley and Will Linder for trespassing on Bro. Dave Williamson's place after nite and the deacons was to notify them of the charges against them."
   June 11, 1892:  "Charges was preferred against Bro. George Riley for using profanity and a committee of one J. B. Franklin was to notify Bro. George Riley of the charges against him."
    August 13th, 1892  "Bro. J. B. Franklin reported that Bro. George Riley stated that he would meet with the church and answer to charges against him but he was absent and the church continued his case until next meeting."
   September 10th 1892  "Bro. George Riley made satisfactory concessions to the church for using profanity."
    February 4th 1893  "Charges was preferred against Bro. George Riley and Ab Knight for drunkness and a committee Bro. J. B. Franklin and E. T. Johnson was to notify them of charges against them."
   June 3rd 1893 (after several deferrals at monthly meetings) "Bro. George Riley's case was taken up and the church withdrew fellowship from him."
   August 1894, George is restored to Central Baptist Church.
   April 8th, 1899: "Bro. George Riley called for a letter of dismission which was granted"

Effie Ara SULLIVAN [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 on 3 Sep 1881 in Arkansas. She died 3, 4 on 9 Jan 1910 in Berea, Ashley Co., Arkansas. She was buried 3 in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas. Effie married 2, 5 George Thomas RILEY "Big George" on 18 Dec 1898 in Ashley Co., Arkansas.

   From the January 13, 1910 edition of the Ashley County Eagle:
"Mrs. George Riley died at her home in the Berea neighborhood last Sunday."
   From the February 3, 1910 edition of teh Ashley County Eagle:
"OBITUARY: On Jan. 9th, 1910, Mrs. Effie Sullivan Riley, wife of George W. Riley, fell asleep in Jesus, leaving a husband, little daughter, mother, sister, three brothers, and many relatives to grieve for her love and presence. … Just twenty-eight years old, and sick with pneumonia for nine days – how few those years and days compared with the happy influence of her unselfish love and life.
