An account of John William Johnson is given in a biography featuring his son, William Monroe Johnson, in the 1890 publication by Goodspeed, "Biographical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas", page 908.
"...(He) was left an orphan in early boyhood, but being of a very enterprising and energetic disposition he succeeded in accumulating a handsome fortune, which was subsequently swept away by security debts which he was compelled to pay.  During this time he was a resident of Yalobusha County, Mississippi, and the men for whom he went security were Magic & Skipper, wealthy men of Western Texas at the present time, who were then cotton and general merchants of Grenada, Mississippi.  They saw a chance to take advantage of Mr. Johnson for a debt of $41,000, did so, and the magnificent estate which the latter owned, together with eighteen slaves and other valuable property went to satisfy the creditors of the notorious firm of Magic & Skipper.  Mr. Johnson then took up a timber claim, and he and his family lived in a rude board structure throughout one winter, then sold out and moved to Warren Countyk, near Vicksburg, Mississippi, where they made their home for seven years."
Note that the Goodspeed publication also attributed Mississippi as John William Johnson's birth state, which conflicts with other sources stating Tennessee.

BROWN, Nancy

Ben Tubbs was born 15 December 1834 in Alabama.  He arrived in Ashley County, Arkansas, sometime prior to 1860, when he is noted as being in Egypt Township of Ashley County for the Federal Census.  Also in 1860 a land patent for 160 acres was issued to Ben, which was the northeast quarter of section 33 in Township 19S, Range 7W (see the map associated with the multi-media edition of this report).  He is known to have served in the army of the Confederate States of America, and after his return to Ashley County he married Susan Cason, on 10 July 1866.  Ben and Susan are thought to have had eight children, with at least two dying before reaching adulthood.
Ben has a well-documented and shall we say a very "unsavory" past.  He was an avid member of the Ku Klux Klan as noted in Y. W. Etheridge's 1959 book "History of Ashley County".  In this publication Ben is described as a "physical giant, long, lank and lean, and a man of high integrity who so conducted himself." [Etheridge, p. 98]  An account is even given of Ben attempting to hang a negro who was "armed with a long saber" and allegedly participating in a "possible uprising of negroes" [ibid, p. 116].  Not surprisingly, Ben was active in the Democratic party who were staunch supporters of the old Confederacy.  Ben served as an Egypt township Committeeman for the Democratic party [ibid, appendix p. xxxvi].  Ben also led an Egypt township committee to raise funds for Confederate Vets, and was among the 3500-4000 present on the Hamburg square on 26 September 1889 at a "dinner-on-the-ground" celebration and barbeque in honor of the Confeterate Vets [ibid, appendix p. xxvii].
Sometime between 1874 and 1878 Ben's wife Susan died.  On 17 February 1878 he remarried to Nancy Brown, who remained his wife until Ben's death in 1913.  Ben is buried in Morgan Cemetery, Ashley Co., Arkansas along with his second wife Nancy.

Susan CASON 1 was born 2 about 1843 in Alabama. She died 2, 3 in 1874/1878. Susan married 1 Benjamin A. TUBBS 3, 4 on 10 Jul 1866 in Ashley Co., Arkansas.

  M viii
James TUBBS was born 1 about 1874.

This could potentially be the James Tubbs mentioned in the 22 August 1895 edition of the "Ashley County Leader", which notes:
"James Tubbs, the afflicted son of R.A. Tubbs, Elon, died Monday evening. He was about 22."
The son of R. A. Tubbs is likely a transcription error, with James' father being B. A. Tubbs.
