 Charles Herman Smith, 71, of Lake Village died Monday, February 21, 2005. He was a carpenter, a member of the Lake Village Baptist Church and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was born October 10, 1933, in Hamburg to the late Herman F. Smith and Doris Stell Smith.

Charley lived at Berea, Arkansas, and worked at a lumber mill. He also owned farm land and raised cotton and all kinds of produce to eat. He had cattle, horses and hogs. [Lottie Williams, ca 1988]

Ralph Aubrey WILLIAMS [scrapbook] 1 was born on 26 Apr 1919 1. He died on 24 May 1944 1 in New Guinea.

   Sgt. Ralph Aubrey Williams was born in Ashley County on April 26, 1919, and killed in the service on May 24, 1944, at Samari, New Guinea. He was the youngest of eleven children in a family from the Berea area northeast of Hamburg, and his parents, Charley Ambrose and Ella Jane Stanley Williams, are buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery.
   When he was young, he moved with two of his brothers to the area of McNary, Arizona, and after finishing school, joined the Arizona National Guard. He served as a master sergeant with the Arizona Bushmasters in the 158 Infantry. He was initially buried in Grave 82 at the cemetery there in New Guinea. After the war, his body was brought back to Arkansas for burial, possibly either in Ashley County or Bradley County. He is not listed on the Ashley County Veterans Memorial.

Joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Berea in Ashley County, Arkansas, in October 1868.  W. C. later became pastor of the church, serving from October 1879 to March 1879 [Mt. Olive records].
W. C. was the first postmaster of Midway, Drew Co., Arkansas.  W. C. and the family moved from the Midway area to Monticello in the fall of 1883 [Kimbro autobiography].

When John was around five years old, he was stricken with Spinal Meningitis or Infantile Paralysis, after which he became a cripple for life [Kimbro autobiography].

Excerpt from "History of Ashley County" by Y. W. Etheridge:

January 27, 1890, J. W. Kimbro opened the Berea High School as principal. For the primary department the chargewas $1.50 per month per pupil; for academic, $2.50; for higher branches, $3.00. It is problematic what was meant by the designations "academic" and "higher branches."  Mr. Kimbro later moved to Monticello, held several county offices in Drew county and practiced law there until his death. He practiced law for a time in Ashley county at Hamburg during the 1920's. He was a self educated man, honorable and upright. He had infantile paralysis in his childhood while living at Berea and spent his life on crutches.

FAMILY STORY: Settled around St Ann's Church at Broadway and Elmslie St; probably married at St Ann; both were Catholic; one of the churches - St Ann's or St Mary's - has been destroyed recently
FAMILY STORY: Came to US so as not to serve in French Army.  Had a sister still in France re Genevieve.  Sister was wealthy as she was left money by people she had worked for (at a convent?).  Owned a winery and a convent, lived alone and never married.
OCC: Visa/passport shows that he is an employee of Pullman Car Shop
