She was buried on 30 Jul 1913 4 in Douglas, Cochise Co., Arizona 4. Gay married Carle E. CAMPBELL in Bet 1900/1910.

Other marriages:
GRAY, Gustav

Carrie Gertrude "Gay" Slater was born in January, 1872 in Streetor, La Salle County, Illinois.  Gertrude was the fifth of seven children born to Benjamin Franklin Slater and Louisa Joanna Dart.  In 1884 the family moved to the Arkansas River Valley of eastern Colorado [1].
Carrie would meet Gustav "Gus" Gray, and on October 22, 1889 they were married in Prowers County, Colorado.  The marriage brought forth three children, but Gus would die after only 10 years of marriage on 2 April 1900.  Family tradition has passed down that Gus died from sunstroke while on the range as a cowboy, but he apparently died in the Colorado State Insane Asylum in Pueblo, Colorado [2].
In 1900, a widowed 28 year old Gay is residing in Bent County, Colorado, with her three children.  Gay remarried sometime prior to 1910 to Carl (or Earle) E. Campbell.  In 1910 they lived at 1011 East Ninth Street in Pueblo, Colorado.  Gay had a child with Carl, but the baby died in infancy.  This marriage was apparently short lived, as evidenced by a letter Gay wrote in 1911 from Florence, Colorado, to her brother Bert where she states she is single.  However, she apparently had some contact with Carl as he would sign her death certificate as reporter two years later.
It is probable that Gay accompanied her newlywed daughter Nina and son in law Art to Kansas, where they were known to be in 1912 for the birth of their first child, Gertrude Ida Trotter.  The baby was obviously named after Gay, but she was also the namesake of Art's mother, Ida.  Regardless of whether Gay went with her daughter to Kansas, by 1913 Gay and her three children and son in law all lived in Douglas, Arizona, where the men were employed in the copper mining industry [3].
It is not known what troubled Gay, but she would tragically end her own life on July 29, 1913 in Douglas, Arizona [4].  Gay was only 41 years old, and was buried in Douglas, Arizona.

[1]  Newspaper articles from 1950 and 1956 on Gertrude's brother, Bert Slater provide conflicting dates on when the family moved-an alternate date is 1881, but 1884 is deemed more likely.
[2]  Personal correspondence with Linda Fluharty Myers.
[3]  There is some amount of supposition concluding the entire family was there by 1913-it is known that Art and Nina were in Douglas by 1914 (the birth of their second child), and that by 1917 that Art, Nina along with Nina's brothers were in Douglas.  Given that Gertrude died 1913 in Douglas, it's assumed the entire family went to Douglas together around 1913.
[4]  Gertrude's death certificate states that she died from a gunshot to the head "delivered by her own hand." (from Linda Fluharty Myers).
